Children reading in the Literacy Center.

Literacy Center

The University of South Alabama Literacy Center is a community engagement program hosted by the College of Education and Professional Studies. Located at University Commons, the Literacy Center provides children in the local community opportunities to enhance their reading and writing skills through individual and group sessions. The center also hosts a fun, interactive literacy summer camp for rising 3rd through 6th graders.

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all." –Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

The Literacy Center is now offering remote and in-person reading and writing support for K-12 students.

  • “They did so many fun things with the kids. And the counselors were always so energetic!”
  • “My son has been welcomed from the beginning with open arms. When his struggles surfaced, he's been encouraged and inspired to push through and lean in. His overall performance has improved in the classroom and his self worth has skyrocketed!”
  • “All I heard about was the ‘fun’ stuff, crafts, ‘cool’ pretend campfire, laying on the floor for silent reading. Then, at the end of the week, he came home with a journal, writings, and a record of all the books he read. All of that, in addition to some pretty cool crafts, was really impressive. I've already recommended the camp to others!”
  • "Mrs. Holland at the USA Literacy Center is wonderful. She worked with Jackson, and almost right away, his grades dramatically improved. I can actually see it in real time. She has such a love for education and for children. You can just feel it. It’s almost tangible. She has a passion for really wanting the children to grasp the concepts."
